Software Engineer, Teleoperation
About the role
Our operators wear an exoskeleton and a headset and work through a robot on site. You'll build the software that holds that together. That means the runtime connecting operator, robot and video. It means the networking that carries the signal reliably, the tools operators and engineers use every day, and the logging that captures every session as force-rich data.
This is a hands-on role on real hardware. Latency, reliability and failure handling matter more here than almost anywhere else, because there is a person on one end and energized equipment on the other.
What you'll do
- Build and maintain the teleoperation runtime that connects the operator station, robot and video pipeline, working with our controls and vision engineers
- Design networking for low-latency, predictable communication, first locally and then over real distance, with clear behavior when the link degrades or drops
- Build robust logging of everything that happens in a session (joint states, forces, video, operator commands, events) as the foundation of our data pipeline
- Build tools for operators and engineers: setup and calibration flows, system health monitoring, session review and debugging
- Own reliability: monitoring, testing, crash recovery and safe failure modes
- Work with the robot learning team to make session data easy to process, label and export
- Package, deploy and update software on systems in the field, and support deployment engineers on site
What we're looking for
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally on robotics, real-time or embedded systems
- Strong C++ and Python
- Experience with Linux, networking (UDP/TCP, WebRTC or similar), and concurrent or real-time software
- Familiarity with ROS/ROS2 or similar robotics middleware
- Experience building systems that run on real hardware and have to keep working when things go wrong
- Care about clean, tested, maintainable code
- Willingness to get hands-on with hardware in the lab and occasionally in the field
Nice to have
- Experience with teleoperation, video streaming or XR systems
- Experience with time-series or multimodal data pipelines (synchronization, storage, formats)
- Experience with safety-critical or fault-tolerant software
- Experience with embedded systems, motor controllers or fieldbus protocols (EtherCAT, CAN)
- Experience with Rust, CUDA or GPU video encoding
About Mundane
Mundane builds force-feedback teleoperation for dangerous, hands-on work. A skilled tradesperson wears our exoskeleton and works through a robot on site, seeing in stereo and feeling the forces it meets, from outside the hazard. We're starting with energized electrical work and expanding across the trades. Every job also produces the force-rich data that robot learning is missing. We're a small, venture-backed team in Palo Alto.
