Software Engineer, Systems & Robotics
About the role
Our teleoperation system is a lot of computers that have to behave like one: the operator station, the robot's onboard compute, cameras, motor controllers and the network between them. When something is slow or breaks, the cause could be anywhere from a kernel driver to a misconfigured service.
We're looking for an adaptable software engineer who's comfortable working across that whole stack, from kernel and hardware up to applications. You'll pick up new tools quickly and reason about how the system behaves all the way down to the metal.
What you'll do
- Develop, debug and maintain software in C, C++, Python and C# across embedded and desktop Linux systems
- Bring up and integrate hardware, including PCIe devices, expansion cards, cameras and peripherals, and work with the drivers and kernel modules behind them
- Tune system performance through CPU core allocation, process and thread pinning, scheduling and service configuration, so control and video stay predictable under load
- Build and troubleshoot networked systems, from protocol-level behavior to service deployment
- Pick up unfamiliar codebases, tools and domains as projects require
- Debug on real robots with the controls, vision and hardware teams
What we're looking for
- A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience, or a master's with 1 to 2 years
- Extensive hands-on experience with Linux, including system administration, the command line and debugging at the OS level
- Strong C++ and Python, plus working experience with C and C#
- Solid understanding of computer hardware, including PCIe and other expansion standards, device drivers, and how the kernel interacts with hardware
- Working knowledge of Linux internals: process scheduling, systemd services, CPU affinity and core isolation, and resource management
- Good grasp of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, UDP, and common network protocols and services
- A track record of learning quickly and adapting to new technical areas
Nice to have
- Network security basics: firewall configuration, secure remote access (SSH, VPNs) and system hardening
- Understanding of common attack surfaces and secure practices for networked devices
- Graphics and vision libraries such as Unity, OpenGL, Vulkan or OpenCV
- Exposure to robotics software stacks, including perception, machine learning integration and basic control systems
- ROS 2
About Mundane
Mundane builds force-feedback teleoperation for dangerous, hands-on work. A skilled tradesperson wears our exoskeleton and works through a robot on site, seeing in stereo and feeling the forces it meets, from outside the hazard. We're starting with energized electrical work and expanding across the trades. Every job also produces the force-rich data that robot learning is missing. We're a small, venture-backed team in Palo Alto.
