Vision Engineer, Teleoperation & XR
About the role
Our operators work through the robot's eyes. If the picture lags, stutters or loses depth, they slow down and stop trusting what they see. When it's right, the hands follow the eyes and the robot disappears.
You'll build the vision and immersive interfaces that make that happen, owning the path from camera sensor to headset: capture, processing, encoding, streaming and rendering in VR. Latency, image quality and reliability all matter. The role sits where computer vision, real-time graphics and systems engineering meet, and you'll work at every layer of that pipeline.
What you'll do
- Develop VR and XR applications in Unity with OpenXR for real-time robot teleoperation and visualization
- Build and optimize rendering pipelines with OpenGL and Vulkan for low-latency, high-quality display on XR headsets
- Design and implement computer vision and image processing pipelines with OpenCV and CUDA
- Build video capture and streaming pipelines with GStreamer, including hardware-accelerated encoding and decoding
- Select and tune video codecs (H.264, H.265 and similar) to balance latency, bandwidth and image quality
- Work on the network layer that carries video and data between robots, operators and headsets, keeping it stable over real-world links
- Integrate cameras, sensors and compute hardware on Linux-based embedded and desktop platforms
- Profile and optimize the full glass-to-glass pipeline, from camera sensor to the operator's display
What we're looking for
- A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience, or a master's with 1 to 2 years
- Strong experience with Unity and VR development, including OpenXR
- Hands-on experience with OpenGL and Vulkan
- Solid knowledge of computer vision and image processing, with practical OpenCV experience
- Experience with CUDA or other GPU-accelerated processing
- Experience building video pipelines with GStreamer, and a working understanding of video codecs and streaming
- Networking fundamentals as they apply to real-time video and data (UDP/TCP, RTP/RTSP or WebRTC)
- Strong Linux development experience
- Proficiency in C++ and C#, with working knowledge of Python
- Familiarity with GPUs, PCIe devices and camera interfaces, and how they affect performance
Nice to have
- Stereo vision, camera calibration and lens distortion correction
- NVIDIA Jetson or other embedded GPU platforms, including hardware encoders and decoders (NVENC/NVDEC)
- Low-latency streaming for teleoperation or other real-time remote control
- Optics and camera sensors (exposure, HDR, sensor selection)
- ROS 2 and robotics software stacks
- Linux performance tuning, such as process pinning and real-time scheduling
About Mundane
Mundane builds force-feedback teleoperation for dangerous, hands-on work. A skilled tradesperson wears our exoskeleton and works through a robot on site, seeing in stereo and feeling the forces it meets, from outside the hazard. We're starting with energized electrical work and expanding across the trades. Every job also produces the force-rich data that robot learning is missing. We're a small, venture-backed team in Palo Alto.
